I don’t wanna go through the motions
I don’t wanna go one more day
Without Your all consuming passion inside of me
I don’t wanna spend my whole life asking,
What if I had given everything,
Instead of going through the motions?
-Matthew West | The Motions
Take me all the way
How often do you reflect on your life? I’m not talking about reminiscing about the “good ‘ol days”. I mean, when do you really reflect on your life. Think about how you got to where you are. The lessons you learned as a kid, the mistakes you made, the people who guided you or led you astray; all roads you’ve taken to get where you are, the good and bad.
Now, looking back, how many of those memories involve God? Better yet, how many of those memories were just God on the surface; a facade? I fear that we tend to let others, or even ourselves, believe we are in one place with our walk with Christ, when in fact, we are somewhere else. In other words, we are going through the motions of being a Christian, but we’re not truly living it out.
We get good at putting on an act. We know just what to say, what Bible verses to quote, and we make everyone believe we have our lives together. The truth is though, we tend to turn into a completely different person when we get home. We tell ourselves we love God, but we don’t spend time with him. We tell God we are willing to live for Him, but we don’t love others. We say we want to lead others to Christ, then we judge them when they walk in church. We put a lot on the line with what we say we will do, but never follow through. We go through the motions.
In his song, The Motions, Matthew West’s lyrics say it all: “I don’t wanna spend my whole life asking, what if I had given everything, instead of going through the motions?”
What if you gave up everything? What if you quit going through the motions, and let God take control? I’m not saying you’ll be perfect, because, trust me, you won’t. But I am saying you can start here and now. All you have to do is be willing to let God take control. It may take some time to make all the necessary changes, but it’s a starting point. Just trust your heart to God, and let Him take you all the way.
